In Österreich wird dieser Job übrigens Installations- und Gebäudetechniker genannt. Deine Hauptaufgabe ist in beiden Ländern gleich: Du löst die Alltagsprobleme deiner Kundschaft. Mit Klimaanlagen verhilfst du ihnen zur nötigen Abkühlung an heißen Sommertagen und durch eine funktionierende Heizung sorgst du auch im Winter für die richtige Temperatur. Je nach Spezialisierung bist du für Sanitär-, Heizungs- oder Lüftungsanlagen zuständig und kümmerst dich um die Planung, Einrichtung und Wartung. Dafür montierst du nicht nur Teile, sondern überprüfst auch die technischen Daten und schaust, ob die Geräte in ihrer Effizienz verbessert werden können. Du arbeitest somit auch an ganz unterschiedlichen Orten. Du wirst auf Baustellen sein, in Privatwohnungen oder Werkstätten und großen Industriehallen.

Important Abilities for Anlagenmechaniker*in

To be able to lay electrical connections properly, assemble sanitary facilities and lay pipe systems, you need expertise in these areas. In addition, you need to know about metrology and apply your tools properly. Also you should dominate in technical drawing, because you are going to make sketches for orders.

To perform well at your work, you have to be physically fit as well. For example, to set up a solar power system, you have to climb onto the roof and for sanitary purposes sometimes you have to sit in uncomfortable positions for longer periods. In addition, you should bring a talent for handcrafted tasks for this profession. Indeed you can learn many tricks, but a certain skill level is still required.

Also you have to be equally skilled with your solutions for improvements or construction of plants. Logical thinking and technical understanding help you with that. Since plant mechanic often come in contact with customers during installations, you should be service oriented, because a satisfied customer will book you again.

How to become Anlagenmechaniker*in?

The equipment that you check daily in your job, re-install or repair, requires often fine motor skills or is responsible for the water and gas regulation, which is why a proper education is required. You have to know how to use the different materials. That's why you learn a lot about materials and their properties in your first year.

During your training in Germany, you will find yourself to be already at a specialised sub-region during training. This may be water, heat, environmental or air technology. In Austria, you can also decide during your training between the main modules gas and plumbing, heating, ventilation and control technology. However, not all of the modules can be combined.
