As a nutritionist you have a lot of responsibility. It is not just about creating dietary and meal plans, but about influencing your customers lives. Therefore you have to avoid malnutritions, since it can lead to diseases or health problems. Most eating disorders also have psychological background, which means you need to be prepared to not only handle the patient but also their life story. For some you might not only be a nutritionist but also a life coach.

In order for the meal plans to be well rounded, you need lots of knowledge about food and a talent when it comes to organising and planning. Every little detail of the plan needs to be thought of. Your work should be customer oriented so that, if needed, your patients will consider your help again.

How to become Ernährungsberater*in?

In order to become a nutritionist in Germany, you will first either need an apprenticeship as a dietician assistant or a degree in Health and Nutrition. The job itself can only be achieved by further training. In Austria you can study Nutritional Sciences directly, or choose between a degree in food technology or dietetics to be a nutritionist for healthy people. The degrees can be either achieved by studying at a university, a university of applied sciences or a private academy. In order to also treat sick people, the study in dietetics is needed. In this case, you work with doctors in order to improve a patient's health. In any case, you need to pass an exam to achieve your certificate.

Training and Specializations

To specialise in a field, you can either choose a part of nutritional coaching or train to be an expert in herbalism, whole foods, or else. As a nutritionist you work mainly in institutions that focus on health and nutritions or in rehabilitation centres, hospitals or home for elderly. If you want to, you also have the possibility to be self employed. The health sector is a growing part of the economy. Due to improvements in medicine, people tend to get older which, additionally to the growing understanding for a healthy lifestyle, secures your workplace. The continuing growth of the industry also means that you have to remain up to date by studying and researching on your own to improve your knowledge. In addition to self research you can use seminars, training, workshops or scientific papers to stay up to date.
