BAWAG Group is the publicly listed holding company of BAWAG, which, with more than 4 million customers, is one of the largest banks in Austria. As a dynamic employer, we promote talent and drive technological innovation forward at a rapid pace. Flat hierarchies, a flexible working environment, and equal opportunities for our employees are particularly important to us.

We are looking for a senior Java backend engineer to take ownership of core banking services - systems that are supervised and audited. This is not a greenfield-only role. You will take over and modernise existing services, strengthen API security, and make our platforms audit-defensible under regulatory scrutiny. Alongside that, you will help us bring AI into production the right way: document intelligence and API-driven automation that meet the same security, traceability, and compliance bar as everything else we ship. If you want to build things that survive an audit and work with modern AI tooling, this is the role.

Profil

  • 7+ years of professional Java backend development
  • Strong Spring Boot, REST API design, and microservice architecture experience
  • Solid grasp of OAuth2, OpenID Connect, and Identity & Access Management (Keycloak or equivalent)
  • Experience with PostgreSQL or comparable relational databases
  • Comfortable with Docker, Git, Maven or Gradle, and CI/CD pipelines
  • Experience delivering software in a regulated environment — banking, fintech, insurance, healthcare, or public sector. You know what change control, four-eyes approval, and an audit finding actually mean in practice.
  • The judgement to work independently and the discipline to document decisions
  • Genuine interest in applying AI to enterprise problems — and the instinct to ask how it fails before shipping it
  • LANGUAGE — e.g. English required; German an advantage for stakeholder work
  • Own architecture decisions for critical backend services, balancing delivery speed with security, resilience, and auditability.
  • Lead technical design reviews and guide implementation standards across teams.
  • Mentor engineers through code reviews, pairing, and structured feedback.
  • Take operational ownership in production: incident leadership, root-cause analysis, and prevention actions.
  • Drive cross-team delivery by aligning Product, Security, DevOps, and Architecture on technical trade-offs.
  • Improve engineering maturity: documentation quality, test strategy, observability standards, and secure SDLC practices.

Aufgaben

  • Design, build, and maintain backend services in Java and Spring Boot — REST APIs, microservices, event-driven integrations
  • Take ownership of existing services: modernise them, harden them, and close technical and regulatory findings
  • Secure API integrations using OAuth2, OpenID Connect, JWT, and Keycloak
  • Build and operate services across our hybrid on-prem and Azure landscape, deployed through Jenkins pipelines with all artifacts sourced from our internal Nexus registry
  • Develop AI-supported workflows — agentic API automation — with the security, auditability, and data-protection controls a regulated bank requires
  • Own quality: automated tests, meaningful observability, and production support for what you build
  • Work directly with Product, QA, DevOps, Architecture, Security, and Business — not through layers
  • Own architecture decisions for critical backend services, balancing delivery speed with security, resilience, and auditability.
  • Lead technical design reviews and guide implementation standards across teams.
  • Mentor engineers through code reviews, pairing, and structured feedback.
  • Take operational ownership in production: incident leadership, root-cause analysis, and prevention actions.
  • Drive cross-team delivery by aligning Product, Security, DevOps, and Architecture on technical trade-offs.
  • Improve engineering maturity: documentation quality, test strategy, observability standards, and secure SDLC practices.

Unser Angebot

  • In addition, we offer a range of interesting and valuable additional benefits.

Über Softwareentwickler*innen: Häufig gestellte Fragen

Was macht ein Softwareentwickler*in?
