Drei Ratschläge an Dein 14jähriges Ich!

You’re doing great, go easy on yourself you do a good job. I think as a 14 year old and I think all 14 year olds, all teenagers what I responded to most is encouragement and I feel like that’s really important to just encourage and I would want to just be an encouraging voice to my former self, just keep at it, keep going, don’t give up, you’re doing great and just be very … an encouraging voice because that’s what I think would be most helpful.

Was steht auf Deiner Visitenkarte?

What is written on my business card is my name, Jonathan Mann, my twitter handle, @SongADayMann, my last name Mann two Ns, Mann I guess German and I think that actually that’s all, right now I don’t have business card but when I did have one that’s what was written on it just my name and my twitter handle. No kind of song writer or whatever else I would put on there it was just really simple.

Was ist das coolste an Deinem Job?

I mean, really simply the coolest thing about my job is that I get to write a song every single day and songs are awesome and I like songs and who doesn’t like songs. That fundamentally is the coolest thing, it is also some of the songs go viral on the internet, be lots of people see them that’s a benefit but then also there are songs that I feel like resonate with people and I’ll hear in the comments a specific songs really touched someone or that they really liked it and that’s another thing that gets me out of bed to make a song.

Welche Einschränkungen bringt Dein Job mit sich?

One negative thing about Song a Day it can often feel very isolating and lonely; I’m making a Song a Day mostly in my studio alone, I do bring in people occasionally but it’s on a day to day basis, it’s just me making a song everyday and if I worked in an office or something I would have all this interaction, if I had enough money to hire other people to work with me and make it a more of a proper business that would be nice. Another aspect of Song a Day that can feel a little isolating is that, there is this sense on the internet that sometimes that you’re just throwing stuff in to the internet and content on the internet goes by so fast. So much content and it can feel sometimes like your just feeding that and that’s not a good thing to do necessarily, that can be hard.

Worum geht es in Deinem Job?

I write a Song a Day and post it to the internet, most days that just looks like me waking up and making a song and that’s my day. Making money comes from many different streams of revenue basically, YouTube ad revenue is one that’s pretty small, Partrion which is a website on the internet is another one, I do songs for startups for individuals for conferences and cooperate events and there’s lots of other little things that I do that bring in money but that’s basically it.

Wie sieht Dein Werdegang aus?

I was born here in the United States, a state called Vermont 32 years ago and I went to college at a place called Bennington College and I did grad school a place called .. I studied music and recording and things like that. I made a rock opera based on the Super Mario Brothers which I performed around LA for a while and I created a character online called Game Jew. Actually he had a big following in Germany so maybe some people have seen him and after Game Jew stopped, he was like an online video guy, I was looking for a new project I got a flier for this thing called fun a day, which is you make one piece of art for everyday in the month of January I decided to do that, in the month of January of 2009 and I’ve been doing that ever since.

Ginge es auch ohne Deinem Werdegang?

I kind of don’t think that anyone else could do exactly what I’m doing because it’s so specific to me but that’s not to say that you couldn’t have your own Song a Day or thing a day project whatever it is and that you couldn’t do it for a long period of time and that you couldn’t find a way to monetize it. I would say doing exactly what I’m doing would be difficult but doing something like it is perfectly reasonable.
